Traveling from LAX to Sacramento on December 25, 2003 was somewhat difficult yet managable. The increased security concerns meant that there was more traffic than usual. The parking lot we normally use was full but the security guard told us to go ahead and park against the fence as long as we weren't blocking anybody. The lines at the Southwest Terminal were not too bad and we did not have any major issues.

Traveling from Sacramento to LAX on Monday December 29, 2003 with Southwest was a nightmare. Although the weather was bad we managed to turn the rental car in and arrive inside the airport more than an hour before our 12:45 flight. We were soon stressed out as we saw that the Southwest Check-in Line extended all the way to the other end of the airport near the far wall of the baggage claim area. The customers in line with us were also frustrated for several reasons. Part of the frustration stemmed from the fact that the other airlines did not have unusually long lines. Another part of the frustration came from the fact that it was a Monday which is typically less busy in the airport than a Sunday. My wife and I had the 2 babies so we were concerned about making it to the gate in time. We expressed our concern several times to Southwest Airlines employees but each time we were told that there was nothing they could do. After being in line for more than 30 minutes my wife and I agreed that she should do the electronic check-in to make sure our seats would not be given away to stand-by passengers. We finally reached the counter at 12:40 and promptly told our rep that our flight was scheduled to take off in 5 minutes. He said they could not hold the flight for us. He said there was one seat available on a flight after 1pm and two seats on a 3pm flight. Our son was over 2 years old so we were required to have 3 seats. We explained that we could not fly stand-by with a 4 month old and a 2 year old. I asked why someone didn't help us when we asked for assistance earlier. If someone would have checked earlier maybe there would have been 3 seats on one of these flights. We started looking into flights for Tuesday, December 30 but of course we had to make plans. I used my cell phone to call the office and let them know the situations. My wife called her mom to see if she would be able to pick us up and return us to the airport the following day. I told my wife that the next time we make the trip we should just drive(it is only a 6 hour drive from Sacramento to Los Angeles). After some time the Southwest employee said a third seat had opened on the 3pm flight. We grabbed it and caught the flight. On the one hand I was happy to get home but on the other hand I wish there was something Southwest could do to prevent these situations in the future.
