The Matrix begins by showing the Warner Brothers,
Time Warner and Village Roadshow Pictures titles.
The viewer sees green computer characters going down the screen as a phone call is heard. A woman who we later lean is Trinity is heard talking. A man tells her that she wasn't supposed to relieve him. The male voice says, "You like him, don't you? You like watching him." He goes on to say, "We're gonna kill him do you understand?" Trinity explains that Morpheus believes he is the one, and it doesn't matter what she believes. We are then taken to a police scene where several officers have Trinity in view. They tell Trinity to put her hands over her head. The sign outside is from the O' The City Hotel. Agent Smith tells the police Lieutenant that he was given specific orders. He tells the lieutenant that his men are already dead. Trinity fights the police using extreme karate moves and walking on walls. Trinity tells Morpheus that the line was traced(he says he knows). Morpheus tells her she can make it to the phone and that she needs to focus. Trinity takes the police heard agents on a rooftop chase. Giant leaps across buildings are seen. The police see her jumps and say that it is impossible. She does a flying leap through a window, down stairs, and ends with guns drawn. She answers a phone in a phone booth and then disappears right before the booth is smashed by a truck driven by one of the agents. The agents say the name of their next target is Neo. We see a young man with his head on his desk taking a nap. The computer screen says the following: "Wake up, Neo..." "The Matrix has you..." "Follow the white rabbit." "Knock, knock Neo" During the messages on screen Neo was hitting Esc and Ctrl but they were useless. Right after the screen said knock, knock there is a knock on the door. Neo tells Choi he is 2 hours late. Choi buys a disc from Neo for two grand. Neo tells Choi that he does not feel right, that he doesn't know if he is awake or dreaming. Choi says it is it's called mescaline and adds that it is the only way to fly. Choi asks Dujour if they should Neo with them and she says definitely. She tries to convince Neo saying, "It'll be fun. I promise." She hugs Choi and shows a white rabbit on her shoulder. The group arrives at a Night club where there is an abundance of alcohol, cigarettes and loud music. Neo is approached by Trinity who already knows his name. He tells her he knows the name Trinity as the person who cracked the IRS T Base, adding that he thought Trinity was a guy. She tells Neo that they're watching him and that she knows why he hardly sleeps. She goes on to say that Neo is, "looking for him." She says that she wasn't really looking for him, but for an answer. Telling Neo it is the question that brought him here, she reveals that he knows the question. At that point Neo says, "What is The Matrix?" Trinity states that the answer is out there. Neo is shown getting in trouble for being late to work. Mr. Rhinhart tells Neo(Mr. Thomas Anderson) that he has a problem with authority, thinking that rules do not apply to him. Rhinehart tells him that the time has come to make a choice on being on time. A delivery man approaches Neo in his cubical and hands him a box containing a cell phone. Neo answers the ringing phone. "Hello Neo, do you know who this is?" "Morpheus." "We have run out of time." "Stand up and see for yourself." "The elevator." Morpheus explains to Neo that there are two ways out of the building. One can exit via the scaffold outside the window or in the custody of the authority figures. Morpheus makes a point of saying, "the choice is up to you". Neo chooses the scaffold at first but later changes his mind. Deciding that the scaffold is too dangerous, Neo goes with the authority figures. The authority figures are the agents. They explain to Neo that he is currently living 2 lives and that one has a future while the other does not. Agent Smith takes his sunglasses off and reveals to Neo that his colleagues believe he is wasting his time with Neo. He offers to give Neo a clean slate from all his computer crimes if he cooperates in bringing a known terrorist to justice. Neo responds by offering to give him the finger instead. Next he demands his phone call. Agent Smith puts his sunglasses back on and asks Neo what good a phone call is if he cannot speak. Alarmingly, Neo's mouth seals shut at that point. The agents then unbotton his shirt and put a bug in his belly button. The next scene shows Neo waking up, checking his mouth and hearing the phone ring. The voice is Morpheus. He says, "You are the one Neo... I've spent my entire life looking for you." He instructs Neo to go to the go to The Adams Street Bridge. A car pulls up and Trinity tells Neo to get in. Switch pulls a gun on Neo as they explain that they need to protect themselves from him. Switch says, "Listen to me coppertop, we don't have time for 20 questions." We soon see the significance of the coppertop (or battery) comment. Startled, Neo begins to get out of the car but Trinity talks him into staying. They remove the bug from his belly button and throw it out of the car. Rain and lightning appear in the background as they enter a large building and climb up stairs. The checkered floor adds an eerie feeling. Trinity advises Neo to be honest. Morpheus appears with sun glasses and a trench coat. He tells Neo that he is like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole. Explaining that Neo accepts what he sees because he is expecting to wake up, the voice of Morpheus has a calming affect. Morpheus asks Neo if he believes in fate. Neo says he does not because he doesn't like the idea that he is not in control of his life. Morpheus assures Neo that he knows why he is here, likening his dilemma to , "a splinter in your mind driving you mad." Neo asks what the Matrix is. Morpheus explains that the Matrix is everywhere, all around us. He says it is the world that has been pulled over your eyes hiding the truth that you are a slave. Morpheus goes on to say that no one can be told what the Matrix is, it has to be experienced. Neo is given a choice of taking the Red Pill where the story ends or taking the Blue Pill where he will stay in Wonderland and see "how deep the rabbit hole goes." Apoc says that we are almost on-line. Neo is strapped into a chair and it is explained that the pill is part of a trace program. It is asked how one would know the difference between the dream world and the real world. Neo starts to go into replication then arrest. The next scene is unlike anything in the movie to this point. A loud heartbeat is heard as a bald Neo appears naked in a pod with slime and tubes everywhere. Neo looks around and sees countless pods just like his as far as the eye can see. A robot comes and grabs him by the neck releasing a tube from the back of his head. He is flushed down and then picked up by Morpheus' ship. Morpheus says, "Welcome... To the real world. We've done it Trinity. We've found him." Morpheus explains to Neo that his eyes hurt because he has never used them before. Neo asks where he is as Morpheus explains that more important than what is when. He says the year is more like 2199 than 1999. Morpheus goes on to explain that his ship, the Nebuchadnezzar, is a hovercraft. Neo meets Apoc, Switch (who earlier pulled a gun on him) and Cypher (who does not seem trustworthy). Finally, he is introduced to Tank, his big brother Dozer and Mouse. Neo is put in a char again with a tube going into his head. They show him the construct-loading program which uses residual self-image. The scenery switches to clouds, lightning and rain. It is explained that humans gave birth to AI, an entire race of machines. The machines eventually turned agains the humans. The humans scortched the sky because the machines were dependent on solar power. The machines found an alternate source for power in human bodies. Human bodies became their source of energy. The dead humans were fed intraveniously to the living. The machines controlled the humans by pulling a computer generated dream world over their eyes. Human beings became batteries. Morpheus tells Neo that normally there is a rule. Normally they do not free a mind after it has reached a certain age. He tells Neo of the prophet who could change the Matrix whenever he wanted. He freed the first group of humans. After he died the Oracle prophecized his return. Neo notices that Tank and Dozer have no holes from tubes. Tank explains that he and Dozer are from Zion, the last human city. Tank hooks Neo up with combat training. He does Jujitsu and other martian arts for 10 hours straight. He then tells Morpheus that he knows kong fu. Morpheus and Neo have a sparring session. Morpheus tells Neo that rules can be bent and even broken. He tells Neo that his weakness is not his technique. Neo tells Morpheus that he knows what he is up to. Morpheus says that fear, doubt and disbelief have to be let go, that the mind has to be free. Neo fails the jump program on his first attempt like everyone else. Feeling his mouth while back in the ship, Neo notices blood. Morpheus states that your mind makes it real. He goes on to say that the body cannot live without the mind, meaning that if you die in the Matrix you die in real life. Neo approaches Cypher who has a bunch of things going on in the monitors. He tells Neo that his appearance startled him. He switches one of the monitors off so that they are all showing the usual characters going down the screen. Neo is given a drink and a piece of advice. He is told by Cypher to run his ass off if he sees an agent. We are taken to a nice restaurant where Agent Smith and Cypher (Mr. Reagan) are eating. Agent Smith asks Cypher if they have a deal. Cypher notes that the steak he is eating does not really exist. He says that ignorance is bliss. He demands that he not remember anything, he be made rich and that he be an important person like an actor. Smith says he needs access codes to the Zion mainframe. Cypher reiterates that he does not know them but that he can deliver Morpheus who does. Morpheus tells the crew to prepare the ship because he is taking Neo to see the Oracle. There is a Hotel with bricks everywhere. Cypher plants the phone (or bug) in a trash can. Morpheus, Neo and Trinity ride off in a car. During the car ride Neo asks Trinity about the Oracle. He asks if she went to see the Oracle and Trinity says yes. Trinity starts to tell Neo what the Oracle told as they arrive. Morpheus shows Neo the door to the Oracle and explains that he can only show the door, Neo must choose to walk through it. Potentials are in the waiting room. Kids have Building blocks suspended in the air. A bald little girl bends a spoon. She says the secret is that there is no spoon, it is not the spoon that bends, it is yourself. The Oracle calmly tells Neo not to worry about the vase right before he bumps into it and breaks it. The Oracle lights up a cigarette and says, "I can see why she likes you." When Neo asks who she mutters, "Not too bright though." She says, "Do you think you are the one?" Neo says he doesn't know. She tells him that no one can tell you if you're in love, you just know. As she looks him over, Neo says, "I'm not the one." She replies by saying, "Sorry kid. You got the gift but it looks like you're waiting for something. The next life maybe. Poor Morpheus. Whithout him, we're lost. Morpheus believes in you, Neo. He believes it so blindly that he's going to sacrifice his life to save yours. You must make a choice. One of you is going to die." She tells Neo that he will feel better after he leaves. This is because he does not believe the fate crap anyways, he believes he is in control of his own life. She gives him a cookie to sooth him. He says he saw a black cat, then again just like it. The others tell Neo Deja vu is not a good sign, it often means they changed something in the Matrix. Agents appear with guns as the humans run upstairs. Mouse is shot and killed as the others scramble to get inside the walls to hide. As they are scaling behind the walls Cypher caughs and then sneezes. The agents hear the noise and begin shooting. An agent breaks through the wall and Morpheus attacks him. Morpheus sacrifices himself to get Neo out; he tells the others to run. Agent Smith strikes Morpheus whose head slams into a toilet. Soon agents surround Morpheus and take him away as a prisoner. Cypher gets back into the ship before the others, using a car crash as an excuse. Cypher shoots Tank and goes for Dozer. Dozer rushes Cypher but it is too late. Suddenly Neo's line goes dead because Tank is not responding on the other end. Cypher talks to Trinity who is angry. Cypher talks of Morpheus saying,"I'm tired of that jackoff and all his bullshit." He says Morpheus can shove the red pill up his a**. He pulls the plug on Apoc who dies instanly. He toys with Trinity and Switch telling Trinity that if she has anything important to tell Switch she better make it quick. Switch states that she does not want to die in this fashion. He mercilessly kill Switch by pulling her plug. Happily he moves towards Neo and reasons that he cannot be the one because he is about to pull the plug. Suddenly Tank reappears and shoots Cypher. Trinity comes back to the ship and sees that Tank is shot but Tank assures her that he'll be ok. We see that Morpheus is now being held prisoner in a military style building. He is handcuffed as Agent Smith begins the interrogation. He explains that the first Matrix was a disaster because it was too perfect. Morpheus is given an injection in the neck. Agent Smith states that machines taking over is the next logical step in evolution. Tank knows they are breaking into the mind of Morpheus to get the codes to the Zion mainframe. Tank concludes that they have no choice but to pull the plug on Morpheus. The agents decide to release the sentinels on the ship. As Tank is about to pull the plug from Morpheus, Neo tells him to stop. Neo reveals that the Oracle told him that he would have to make a choice. Morpheus believed that Neo was something he is not. Neo says he has to attempt to rescue Morpheus because he believes he can bring him back. Agent Smith continues to try to get to Morpheus as the serum flows through his veins. He states that humans are not mammals, they are a virus. He thinks of human beings as a disease. The agents wonder why the serum isn't working. They reason that perhaps they are asking the wrong questions. Agent Smith tells the others to leave Morpheus with him. He takes his glasses off and his ear piece out. Smith says, "I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This whatever you want to call it. It's the smell. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink. I fear that I have been infected by it. I must get out of here. I must get free. In this mind is the key. Once Zion is destroyed there is no need for me to be here." Neo and Trinity enter the building downstairs and a massive gun fight ensues. The other agents walk in on Smith and ask him what he is doing. They conclude that he is unaware of Morpheus' rescue attempt. Neo reminds himself that there is no spoon as he shoots the elevator cable and he and Trinity go up towards Morpheus with flames fast behind them. Met by an agent on the rooftop, Neo dodges all his bullets but one. Trinity then shoots the agent in the side of the head, taunting him simultaneously by saying, "Dodge this." She then asks Neo how he was able to move like the agents do. Trinity quickly learns how to fly the B-212 helicopter and her and Neo take it down to Morpheus for the rescue. Morpheus breaks the chains behind his back and leaps towards the helicopter. Jumping out instantly, Neo catches him and they dangle by a line. Smith is able to hit the helicopter with gunfire. Neo releases Morpheus on a roof and then jumps down himself. Trinity separates the line from the helicpoter and jumps out as Neo pulls her up. Morpheus then says, "Do you believe it now Trinity?" He tells Morpheus that the Oracle told him what he needed to hear, emphasizing that there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path. The agents state that the trace was completed. The sentinels are standing by. They order the strike. Neo has Morpheus go back to the ship first. A homeless man in the subway watches in disbelief. Trinity tells Neo she wants to tell him something but she is afraid of what it could mean if she does. She says everything is as the Oracle said but this. The phone rings and Agent Smith appears as Trinity goes through phone. She demands to be sent back but Tank cannot do it. Agent Smith annoyingly calls Neo Mr. Anderson.. Morpheus reveals that Neo is beginning to believe. Guns fire. They grasp each other. They are both out of bullets Smith's glasses are broken. He tells Neo he is going to enjoy watching him die. Blood is coming out of Neo's mouth. Neo wipes the blood clean and motions Smith forward. Smith punches in super speed. Smith myseriously looks sideways then drags Neo towards tracks and tosses him in. Smith looks sideways again then jumps in and gets Neo in a headlock as he says, "That is the sound of inevitability. That is the sound of your death." Neo says, "My name is Neo." as he jumps up leaving Smith to get run over as the train comes. Smith somehow comes out of the car and Neo runs. Back on the ship Morpheus tells Tank to charge the EMP. In the Matrix the same Hart O' The City Hotel from the beginning of the film is visible. The Sentinels are now inside the ship. Smith shoots Neo point blank once then twice. Finally, he empties his gun. Neo falls. The agents check him. An agent announces that he is gone. In the ship Trinity tells Neo that she is not afraid anymore, that the mand she loved would be the one. She says, "You can't be dead because I love you." as she kisses him. Neo stands up as if coming back from the dead. More bullets are fired but he makes them fall in front of him. He easily fights Smith one-handed. He jumps inside of Smith and breaks him apart. The other agents look at each other and run. Neo answers the phone as they turn on the EMP to take care of the sentinels. Neo and Trinity kiss on the ship. Neo brings a world without rules and controls. He says, "Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you." The movie ends with Rage Against the Machine playing as Neo puts on his sunglasses in the Matrix, looks up and flies away. --Eric Sprague Review by Amazon.com reprinted with permission Amazon.com essential video By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash The Matrix, the codirecting Wachowski brothers--Andy and Larry--annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. Set in the not too distant future in an insipid, characterless city, we find a young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves). A software techie by day and a computer hacker by night, he sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign, a signal--from what or whom he doesn't know--until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) seeks him out and introduces him to that faceless character he has been waiting for: Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on the dark secrets that have troubled him for so long: "You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad." Ultimately, Morpheus illustrates to Neo what the Matrix is--a reality beyond reality that controls all of their lives, in a way that Neo can barely comprehend. Neo thus embarks on an adventure that is both terrifying and enthralling. Pitted against an enemy that transcends human concepts of evil, Morpheus and his team must train Neo to believe that he is the chosen champion of their fight. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Reeves and Fishburne--who both turn in fine performances--much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Moss, who flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the fecklss, semipsychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise--a chapter that is arguably superior to the other sci-fi smash of 1999 (you know... the one starring Jar Jar Binks). --Jeremy Storey |
