Half Dome is over 8,000 feet high. The hike from the Yosemite valley floor is a long one(over 15 miles round trip). The increase in elevation from the Yosemite valley floor is almost 5,000 feet.
Having done the Half Dome hike twice, I have learned from these experiences. The hike takes a long time so be prepared for darkness on the way back. No matter how early you start, you must take at least one flashlight with fully charged batteries(even if you start at 5am). Bring plenty of water and food(or a water purifier since there is a lot of natural water along the hiking trails).
Yosemite Valley has many other wonders besides Half Dome. Yosemite Falls is 2,425 feet (739 meters) making it the highest waterfall in the United States.
