Pasadena Attractions

Pasadena is probably most famous for the Rose Parade and the Grandaddy of all bowl games, The Rose Bowl. The city is also home to the California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech) which is behind the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Cal Tech has a very pretty campus that has been used by Hollywood. Cal Tech was widely used in filming The War of the Roses. The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena is also well known. We have pictures from the Rose Bowl, the Norton Simon Museum, City Hall and many other parts of Pasadena. The first game I saw at the Rose Bowl was a regular season game between Stanford and UCLA. It was not a New Years Bowl game but just a home game for UCLA. The Rose Bowl has played host to Olympic Events in 1984 as well as Pro Football Events like Superbowl 27 Between the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills.

The "Hollywood" American Idol in Pasadena

The American Idol Airing on February 4, 2004 was somewhat ironic. It was advertised as the Hollywood Episode where the field would be reduced to 32. The episode actually took place in Pasadena. Although Pasadena is close to Hollywood, it is not Hollywood and it does not even border Hollywood. However, it made a lot of sense to have it in Pasadena. Like Hollywood, Pasadena is an important part of the Los Angeles basin. In addition, Pasadena has several advantages over Hollywood. One advantage is that it is not as hectic and there are not as many distractions. Pasadena is no stranger to big events and large crowds. Every year the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl come to Pasadena so the city knows how to deal with large venues. I believe parts of American Idol were in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The episode was interesting because it was the last one left up to the judges, Randy, Paula and Simon. Once the field is down to 32 it is up to the American public to vote for the next idol.

Caltech and JPL in Pasadena and La Canada

Pasadena received a great deal of publicity when the JPL rovers landed on Mars. On February 5, 2004, it was reported that the Mars rover Opportunity rolled forward about 10 feet going towards some rocks that scientists wanted to study. The Pasadena scientists at JPL were busy working on the "flash memory" of the Spirit rover which actually landed on Mars before the Opportunity rover. Having been to JPL on the Pasadena and La Canada border, I can honestly say that it is an impressive facility.
