ARCADIA Pictures -
Home to the LA Arboretum and the Santa Anita Race Track, Arcadia is a big part of the Greater Los Angles Basin.
In 1875 Lucky Baldwin purchased 8,000 acres in the area that later became known as Arcadia.
The LA Arboretum is located off of Baldwin(the street that was named after him).
We have some interesting photographs from the Arboretum that show the many peacocks in the park.
The Arboretum pictures show that all kinds of different climates exist in California.
BIG SUR Pictures -
We have a magnificent waterfall picture from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
This park is about 37 miles south of Carmel and about 12 miles south
of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Pfeiffer Beach is beautiful yet hard to find.
The way to get there is to take Highway One to Sycamore Canyon Road.
Andrew Molera State Park is a large park that has a path which parallels the Big Sur River.
The River enters the ocean next to Molera's Beach. The park is located about 23 miles south of Carmel.
Another notable beach in the area is Sand Dollar Beach which is approximately 14 miles north
of San Luis Obispo County.
The Big Sur region is just under 100 miles in length.
The area stretches from Salinas, Monterey and Carmel on the north
to San Simeon and San Luis Obispo on the south.
Pictures from Big Sur show the most beautiful portion of the California coastline.
CATALINA ISLAND Pictures -
Catalina Island is approximately 20 miles off the coast of Southern California.
The island has a small airport but the Catalina Express is a cheaper alternative.
The Catalina Express takes about an hour to get to Avalon and it has up to 2 dozen daily departures from San Pedro and Long Beach.
The trip to Two Harbors on the west end of the island is slightly longer(about 90 minutes).
Unfortunately the island is well known because Natalie Wood passed away off shore from the island.
The biggest city on the island is Avalon on the eastern end of the island, but it is a far cry from the big city life of Los Angeles.
In 1975 the Catalina Island Conservancy took control of 88% of the island, limiting new housing and development so that the island ecosystems are not put in danger.
Many of the island activities and tourist attractions center around Avalon.
Originally built in 1892, the golf course in the hills near Avalon was expanded in 1929.
The Casino Ballroom near Avalon is one of the most famous and photographed landmarks on the island.
It is not a true casino in the sense that gambling is not allowed but it is a striking structure and we have a nice picture of the architectural marvel.
William Wrigley Jr.(as in Wrigley Chewing Gum and Wrigley field in Chicago) used to own the island.
It is very fortunate that Wrigley is a part of the island history.
He looked out for the preservation of the island it passed smoothly from his watchful eye to the California Conservancy.
We have some nice photos of the ocean water where it meets the city of Avalon.
Many scuba diving enthusiasts enjoy Catalina as a favorite diving spot.
Our pictures from Avalon Bay show the historic part of the island including the old casino.
LAS VEGAS and Other Gambling Pictures -
Las Vegas is in Nevada within 50 miles of the California border.
It is known throughout the world as one of the best places to gamble.
At 21Ace.com there is a nice Las Vegas page with photos of Las Vegas, Lake Mead and Hoover Dam.
Las Vegas has grown dramatically in the last 20 years.
One of the most impressive things about the city is the architecture and creativity in all the new hotels and casinos.
The lights on the Strip make it an exciting and energetic city. Some of the hotels and casinos truly come to life at night where
their lights give them a completely different appearance(Ceasar's Palace is one example).
Gamblers do not need to cross the state line to play poker.
Commerce Casino in Southern California is known around the world
as a nice place to play poker.

NAPA and SONOMA Pictures -
Napa Valley is famous for wine.
The valley is approximately 30 miles long and a few miles wide.
The area grows about 5 percent of the wine grown in the state of California.
We have pictures of the famous Berringer Wine stored in barrels.
The Berringer House is an impressive structure and our photograph
shows it on a sunny day with the green grass in front.
Not far from Napa, Sonoma is an area rich in history.
We show the Sonoma Mission with the cross on top of the building in our photograph collection.
Our picture of the Sonoma Mission Sign informs the reader
that the monument marks the end of the Mission Trail which
had 300 years of Spanish-Mexican settlement from 1523 to 1823.
The sign notes that the trail traveled as far south
as Guatemala. It goes on to say that in 1823 Mission
San Francisco Solano was found, marking the last
and northernmost outpost on the trail.
Pictures do not do justice to this part of the state.
Napa and Sonoma are two places that must be experienced in person.
SACRAMENTO Pictures -
Sacramento is the California State Capital. We have pictures of some of the important historical and government buildings.
We also have pictures from Old Sacramento which has museums, entertainment and landmarks.
In 1839 John Sutter and his party established Sutter's Fort.
The city grew when gold was discovered but there were constant issues with floods.
In the 1860s the street level was raised to avoid some of the flooding problems.
Our Old Town photos show the Sac River looking North, The Delta King River Boat,
the L Street Landing Sign, the Spirit of Sacramento River Boat,
the Red Fire House Building, the Southern Pacific Monument,
the Wells Fargo Building and a Horse and Stage Coach.
We also show the Railroad history with pictures of an old Union Pacific Car,
a Baldwin Locomotive, the Pacific Depot, the Rio City Cafe and an old Southern Pacific Car.

SAN DIEGO Pictures -
Located approximately 2 hours down the coast from the L.A. Area, San Diego is not far from the Mexican Border.
The world-famous San Diego Wild Animal Park has important programs in place like the California Condor Recovery Program.
It is located off the I-15 freeway approximately 32 miles north of the San Diego Zoo.
The San Diego Zoo is a part of Balboa Park which also includes 15 museums.
Covering 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is one of the largest urban cultural parks in the United States.
Located adjacent to the ocean, Seaport Village has a lot to offer the traveler.
We have many pictures from Seaport Village that show the architecture, charm and scenery of the area.
Some of the Seaport Village photos include the San Diego Bay Sign, San Diego Boat Rentals,
the Coronado Island Boat, the Embarcadero Park Sign, Embarcadero Marina up close,
Embarcadero Park Marina from atop the Marriott, the Embarcadero Park Marina Dedication,
flowers in Embarcadero Park, the Old Town Tour Bus, the Eagle Statue,
various fountains, a horse and carriage, the Trails West Outfit, the tribute
to Chuck Ito and many sunsets. The S.D. convention center is next to Seaport Village
and we have several photos of the art fixture outside the convention center.
The SD Bay Tours let visitors see the 1863 Star of India, Maritime Museum vessels,
The world famous Hotel Del Coronado(we have pictures of it on our Coronado Page),
Naval attractions, the Point Loma Lighthouse and other landmarks.
Shamu the whale helped make Sea World famous and it is a necessary stop when visiting San Diego.
Fortunately I was able to take quite a few pictures from San Diego while staying there on business.
SAN FRANCISCO Pictures -
San Francisco expanded in 1848 because gold was struck in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
We have pictures of the world famous Golden Gate Bridge which is an icon on the West Coast.
We also have a nice photo of Alcatraz.
The island is famous because it was said to be almost impossible to escape from the prison.
Several movies have been made about the famous prison including "The Rock".
Some of our other photos from the SF Bay Area include the Christopher Columbus Statue, the S.F. Coit Tower, Golden Gate Park and the S.F. Skyline.
Pictures from the Golden Gate Bridge show a tremendous
architectural achievement.
SANTA BARBARA Pictures -
Santa Barbara is about 2 hours up the coast from the Los Angeles Basin.
The travel time veries depending on traffic conditions on the 101 and other freeways.
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has Greek, Roman and Egyptian objects.
The Asian Art section has 2,600 objects
from China, Japan, Tibet, India and Southeast Asia. It is located at 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara CA 93101.
The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History contains a 72-foot whale skeleton.
There is a peaceful Nature Trail along historic Mission Creek.
The Museum of Natural History also has a Space Lab and Planetarium.
The Museum of Natural History is located at 2559 Puesta del Sol Road, Santa Barbara CA 93105.
With over 30 acres of botanical gardens framed by the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Santa Barbara Zoo sits atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
We have 2 nice pictures of the giraffes inside the zoo.
Located at 500 Ninos Drive, Santa Barbara CA 93103, the zoo is not far from other scenic attractions on Cabrillo Blvd.
Several photographs are posted on our site from the bike path next to the beach by Cabrillo Blvd.
As a tour bus was driving onto the pier we captured it in film. There are 2 nice restaurants by the pier that we show in photos(Pizza and Hola Amigos).
We took multiple shots of the Dolphin Fountain in front of the pier. Other photographs from the pier include the Aquarium and the Harbor Entrance.
Chase Park is captured several times in photos as it sits very close to the beach and the pier.
Queenie Nguyen was able to provide some educational photos of historic El Camino Mission.
Because our friend had a wedding at the Santa Barbara zoo,
we had a nice opportunity to take plenty of Santa Barbara pictures on the trip.
YOSEMITE Pictures -
Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yosemite was established as a national park in 1890.
Rising over 4,000 feet above the Yosemite Valley Floor, Half Dome is a striking landmark.
El Capitan is another huge landmark which is popular among rock climbers.
Yosemite Falls is a series of 3 waterfalls that descend over 2,000 feet.
We have pictures of Half Dome, El Capitan, the many waterfalls and other scenic locations in Yosemite Valley.

Activision and Luxoflux Corp are located in Santa Monica California which is a suberb of Los Angeles.
Activision is famous for tons of games like Pitfall while Luxoflux is know for putting out Star Wars Demolition and Vigilante 8.

California Aerial Pictures
Check out our new aerial photography by Joel Sprague.
On Feb 06, 2003 Joel went up in Tim's Bonanza plane and took
some great aerial photos.
They captured images from above Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach,
Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, LAX and Santa Monica.
The aerial pictures are extremely high quality so they take awhile
to load(don't bother with a modem). The end result is
worth the wait as the scenes from these aerial shots are stunning.
